PARTICIPATION
Your success is our success and as such all participants must be aware that all such adventurous activities carry the risk of injury and death. All expedition members must fully accept these risks and that they are responsible for their own actions.

ITINERARY ACCURACY
This is an expedition and as all expeditions is vulnerable to external influences. Every effort will be made to keep to the published itinerary but it may be necessary to make changes due to circumstances beyond our control such as flight schedules, weather, local and operational factors. If such changes are forced upon the expedition time spent at certain points, distance travelled and other aspects may vary and before agreeing to participate in this expedition all members must acknowledge this fact.

FITNESS AND PREPARATION
This is a non-technical expedition/trek through a number of varied environments with rugged trekking on clear, well defined paths. Most days are short with the exception of the summit day and are well within the capabilities of most walkers and those with a basic level of fitness. If you have any doubts about fitness or require some training advice please contact us and we will prepare a suitable programme for you.

THE FORMAT OF THE DAY
Most days on the mountain will start at around 0700 following an early night to make the most of the cooler temperatures. After getting up you will pack your equipment away into your kit back which will be carried by porters to the next camp leaving you with your essential items in a daysack. Breakfast will follow and then the porters will pack the tents away as you set off at a leisurely pace allowing full acclimatisation and every chance to enjoy your trek. Lunch will normally be served on arrival at the next camp except on longer days when a packed lunch is provided. Most days you will arrive early in camp which has already been set up and you will then have an hour or so to explore, rest and take photos before your evening meal. We will tend to go to bed early in preparation for the early starts!

FOOD
The food is freshly prepared and intended to give you enough energy for your days trekking whilst still being appealing despite altitude induced appetite loss. An example daily menu would look like this:

BREAKFAST: Black tea, coffee, drinking chocolate, bread with honey, peanut butter, sausage, different types of eggs, fruits, porridge.

LUNCH: Chicken, potatoes, fruit, juice or tea.

DINNER: Rice with beef, macaroni, traditional food.

WATER:
Non-bottled water should not be drunk without sterilizing with tablets, boiling or ideally both.

ACCOMMODATION
Time on the mountain will be a mixture of huts and tents whilst you will be in a well equipped hotel before and after your trek. Facilities on the mountain are basic including wooden ‘long drop' toilets. Tent allocation will be based on the make up of the group.

BAGGAGE
Travel light! There is no need to bring a large amount of clothing or equipment on this trek and there will be weight restrictions on your flights. We are keen to support the welfare of our porters on Kilimanjaro and strictly adhere to the 15kg of client’s equipment per porter rule. Additional items maybe stored at the hotel but may incur additional costs. A detailed packing list will be provided with ‘how to pack’ instructions. In addition to a 25-30l daysack for you to carry essential items in you should ensure that you other baggage is a suitable ‘mountain holdall’ or rucksack—no suitcases!

WHAT TO CARRY AND HOW
There is a full team of porters who will carry the bulk of the expedition equipment and your baggage however in your own daysack you will need to carry such items as water, snacks, sun cream, additional warm clothing and waterproofs. It is highly recommended that you wear your trekking boots to fly out with as this gives you more weight for your luggage but more importantly should luggage go missing boots are the hardest item to replace.

EQUIPMENT
A full kit list will be issued on booking. Advice is available if you need to buy additional items.

HEALTH
First Aid.
Your AdventureHub leader will hold a First Aid Certificate and carry a suitable first aid kit however routine personal medical kits should be carried by each expedition member including plasters, minor painkillers etc. Details are included in the packing list.

Vaccinations. Please seek advice from your GP or similar to ensure you have up to date vaccinations as required.

Malaria. This expedition takes place in a high risk malaria region. Though time at altitude is above the area of risk it is highly recommended that anyone joining this trek takes a suitable prophylaxis. A good insect repellent and long trousers/sleeves are also recommended.

INSURANCE
Insurance which covers mountain rescue and medical expenses is essential. We will require a copy of this insurance certificate prior to departure. Failure to provide a copy will result in you not being allowed to join the expedition and result in loss of payment. Please see our Travel Insurance Fact Sheet. AdventureHub do not sell insurance or act as an agent.

EFFECTS OF ALTITUDE
This itinerary is designed to allow time for you to acclimatise however you may still notice some effects of altitude including headaches or feeling short of breath. Staying well hydrated, eating properly and taking things slowly will help prevent or reduce these symptoms. Your AdventureHub Leader will monitor advise you throughout so please ensure that you inform them if you feel unwell.

GUIDES AND LEADERS
As well as local guides with extremely detailed knowledge you will be accompanied by an AdventureHub Leader who will have extensive expedition experience and/or previous experience on Kilimanjaro. The AdventureHub leader will be your first point of contact during your expedition and will ensure that the entire support team works well together to get the best trip possible for you.

CURRENCY
The local currency in Tanzania is the Shilling and though Travellers Cheques and credit cards can be used the best way to carry your money is in US$.

TIPPING
Tipping is a culturally expected practice and there is a strong tradition of tipping the porters/chefs/local guides and we suggest allowing US$100 for this trip to maintain good relations with the local staff.

FINAL NOTE
This is your trekking expedition! We hope that you decide to join us and in the meantime if you have any questions before making a decision please let us know and hopefully you will be joining us on an expedition to a truly beautiful mountain.

Kilimanjaro has the prestige of being the highest free standing mountain in the world and one the 'Seven Summits' – the much publicised and sort after highest peak on each continent. Even with such qualities this is the least difficult of the Seven Summits and is a very achievable expedition for well prepared trekkers and an excellent introduction to higher altitudes as it stands at an impressive 5895 metres above sea level.

This is a fantastically varied expedition as Kilimanjaro supports 5 major eco- zones: rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and glaciers all of which are encountered on Machame Route which this expedition follows. AdventureHub have a carefully prepared itinerary allowing expedition members to get the most out of their trek but also maximise your adjustment to altitude and acclimatisation to increase your chances of success and enjoyment.

With small group sizes and a high guide to client ratio we can offer an expedition that feels far more individual and will allow you to get the most out of this stunning trek.

If after reading the details in this fact sheet you have any questions please get in touch and we will discuss the expedition with you. Hope to see you there!

OUTLINE ITINERARY

Day 1/2.
International flight and transfer to your hotel in Moshi in the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Welcome brief.

Day 3.
Machame Gate to Machame Camp.
Distance climbed: 1350 metres. Time: 4-5 hours.
Today’s trek starts at 1950 meters at the park gate and climbs gradually through forest to a rocky rise and the Machame Hut at 3300 meters where we set camp.

Day 4.
Machame Camp to Shira Camp.
Distance climbed: 500 metres. Time: 3-4 hours.
As the effects of the increased altitude begin to be felt we have a deliberately short day to acclimatise as the path follows a lava ridge with views of Mt Meru and Kibo and then on through clearings until emerging onto the stony plateau of Shira which we cross to our next camp at 3700 meters.

Day 5.
Shira Camp to Barranco Hut.
Distance climbed: 700metres, distance descended: 450metres.
Time: 4-5 hours. Today is a key stage to acclimatisation and though physically harder than other routes is why the Machame Route has a greater degree of success. The expedition will zigzag climbing and descending on wide, rocky slopes towards the Lava Tower and Arrow Glacier Hut from where, in the distance, you will see the Western Breach. From the base of the Lava Tower at 4400 metres we descend to the Barrnaco Hut at 3950 metres with spectacular views.

Day 6.
Barranco Hut to Barafu Hut.
Distance climbed: 750 metres. Time: 4-5 hours.
The day starts with the expedition crossing the Barranco Valley and climbing upwards through a series of easy rock passages until reaching the broad rocky ridge overlooking Heim Glacier. From here we descend to the Karanga Valley before climbing once again up a rocky ridge to our camp at Barafu Hut 4500 metres.
Day 7.
Barafu Hut to Uhuru Peak and Horombo Hut.
Distance climbed: 1290 metres. Time: 10-14 hours.
Summit Day! We leave our camp in darkness just after midnight on a well marked path climbing a rocky slope to a large gorge flanked by a spectacular glacier. From here we move over more broken ground onto the final snow covered slopes and up out of the crater at Stella Point at 5700 meters. The final climb then takes us left to Uhuru Peak at 5895 metres. After a short time on the summit we start our descent to our high camp and then follow a new path to Horombo Hut.

Day 8.
Horombo Hut to the Marangu Gate.
Distance descended: 1820 metres. Time: 4 hours.
The route takes us down through a forest track to the park gate where you will receive your certificate of the climb. After some time for souvenir shopping you are transferred back to the hotel.

Day 9/10.
Transfer to airport and return flights.

Please note that this itinerary may be subject to some change as a result of external influences such as flights, weather etc however every effort will be made to adhere as closely as possible to this programme.
